Ferhad has a new love .... STEAMPUNK. Our youngest giraffe has always been a huge Cosplay fan, but he's decided the sub-genre of Steampunk is where it's at.
Regular readers may recall an interview FJ did a few years back with Garnet from Kraken's Lair, a Whangarei-based Steampunk group. Garnet was kind enough to send lots of photos through, and they were very cool ... but when you see Steampunk for real walking down the street ... WOW!
Steampunk is a sub-genre of Cosplay. It blends technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery, in a science fiction or science fantasy kind of way. Steampunk costumes, novels, and movies are usually set in an alternative history of the 19th century's British Victorian era or American Wild West, or a funky blend of the two.
Some of our favourite TV shows, liike Warehouse 13 and Firefly, are a bit Steampunky.
Our human took us to the small former goldmining town of Thames (New Zealand's Thames not England's Thames!) for the 2016 Steampunk the Thames Festival ... what a totes amazeballs day we had! Humans can be so clever.
Rebek was impressed by the way a lot of the steampunk outfits, vehicles, and weapons all use recycled materials. Have a look through our photos, and see how many recycled items you can spot. Our human has promised to start making us some Steampunk outfits for next year - we'll keep you posted on their progress!
